March 2026 - SAFETY UPDATE

Spring Break Reminder: Stay Safe Online!

As families enjoy Spring Break, it’s a great time to remember that safety also extends to the digital world. Whether students are using educational apps, connecting on social media, gaming, or shopping online, it’s important to stay mindful of how personal information is shared and protected.

Pinellas County Schools’ Safety Starts With Me and Digital Responsibility initiatives encourage students and families to make smart choices online and protect their digital footprint. Use these simple tips to help keep kids safe while they’re online during the break.

Online Safety Tips for Kids

#1 Tip: Create strong usernames and passwords.
Avoid using personal information like your name, school, or birthday. Choose safe, neutral usernames and strong passwords.

Use strict privacy settings.
Turn on privacy controls and opt out of location tracking or unnecessary data sharing whenever possible.

Be careful with personal information.
Remind your kids to keep private details like phone numbers, home addresses, and school information offline and private.

Check for secure websites.
Look for website addresses that begin with https and show a lock icon, which means the connection is secure and safe.

Know how password recovery works.
Trusted sites will ask you to reset your password through email or another verification method.

Review social media sharing settings.
Set accounts and posts to private so only approved friends can see them.

Share only what is necessary.
When creating accounts, provide only the required information and avoid filling out personal details.

Be cautious with downloads.
Only download apps, games, or files from trusted sources and make sure devices have updated security or antivirus protection.

Enjoy a fun and relaxing Spring Break and remember that online safety starts with each of us.
